Festival circuit

The sequence of international festivals through which a film premieres, competes and acquires standing: Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Locarno and the tier of festivals and markets around them. A circuit run is a real distribution outcome in some countries, because sales agents and buyers are in the building.

In the Philippine case it did something narrower and stranger. The circuit became the country’s source of legitimacy, which is the job a studio’s name used to do, while contributing almost nothing to whether a Filipino could watch the film. A Golden Lion changes what a film means and does not change where it plays in Iloilo. That split is why the course treats prestige and reach as two separate measurements rather than as one story about success.
